The Lord Bless You and Keep You [arr. Wainwright] 2016
Comments by Deputy Divisional Music and Arts Director Andrew Wainwright
The opening section allows room for expression and, although scored at piano, should not restrict the musicality of the quartet. Conversely at section A, when the full band enters, try and hold the piano as much as possible, allowing room for the music to bloom slightly from the end of the sixth bar of A.
A confident, if understated, entry is called for from the Euphoniums the bar before section B which begins a crescendo to forte; try and aim for a warming of the sound rather than a traditional brass band forte on the fourth bar of B. Overall the music calls for a sustained vocal quality throughout, with smooth articulation on every note and a mellow sound from each section.
Programme Note
Peter Lutkin’s beloved choral benediction is well known in vocal circles. Here it is given a simple treatment that it is hoped will inspire prayer reflection and renewed confidence in God’s protection and guidance.
