Fractal 2024
Three movement work:
- Butterfly Wings
- Seashores
- Chaos Game
'FRACTAL' comes from the mathematical concept of fractals; objects that are rough or irregular at all scales and that appear 'disassembled' in a radical way. All movements draw inspiration from chaos theory, and in particular how complexity emerges and develops in unpredictable ways. 'FRACTAL' also has a preface in the form of a poem, written by the composer. The meaning and value of this poem is up to the individual, but in the composer's eyes it is important to see it in light of today's international political landscape:
What makes us human? Where does it stop? Initial conditions, a thread unwinds. One hand pulls - the light resigns. Small sparks kindle, embers touch land. We are glass, but return to sand. Chaos reigns in our new spring, A sun darkened by a butterfly's wings.
'FRACTAL' is written and dedicated to Ila Brassband in connection with the Oslo Brass Festival 2025.
